Let Them Be Little

This song will forever hold a piece of nostalgia for me. The first time I heard it was when I was six years old at my little sister's pre-school graduation. The school had created a video collage of my sister's class with this song playing in the background. The slideshow was full of four and five year-olds being well... four and five year olds. However, I think it sticks with me because it is my first recollection of understanding the magnitude of a photograph. Photographs can capture emotions. Photographs can highlight a significant event. Sometimes when you look at one you can remember how the day sounded or what happened. It's an incredibly powerful and special thing a photograph has the ability to do.

I share this story with you because now when I photograph families, and particularly kiddos, I keep the song's title in the forefront "Let Them Be Little". Yes, I will be sure to capture the smiles at the cameras and the posed moments. But, I will equally prioritize the unposed, the organic, the everyday life moments.

The Morris Family's collection is the perfect mixture of just that. We got beautiful family portraits while simultaneously capturing the kids being little. I used prompts like "red light, green light", "ring around the rosey", and "tickle fight". But the kids also cleverly responded with wrestling moves, family huddles, and tons of laughter. The horse and the five dogs? Well, those are added bonuses in my book!

Thank you Morris family for allowing me to come capture your family at your home. Thank you for trusting me to capture both the beautifully posed moments and the in-betweens. Thank you for showing up authentically and boldly. It's an absolute joy to know you all!
